Weekly timetable:

Our English model text for Summer Term 2:

In English this half-term, we will be learning about instruction writing. Following on from our exploration of Kassim and the Greedy Dragon last half-term, we will be writing instructions for how to train a dragon! We will be looking at using imperative verbs and time adverbials to make our instructions clear and easy to follow. We will also focus on organising our writing into logical steps, using conjunctions to sequence ideas, and including precise and exciting vocabulary to engage the reader. By the end of the unit, the children will create their own detailed set of dragon-training instructions.

Please see our model text below.

How to Train a Dragon

Do you wish to train a dragon safely and successfully? Follow these important instructions carefully!

You will need:
• a strong, shiny shield
• crunchy dragon treats
• a bucket of cold water
• a brave heart

Step 1
First, find a quiet, open space far away from busy streets and noisy crowds. Dragons do not like loud sounds.

Step 2
Next, place the crunchy dragon treats gently on the ground. Then, take three slow steps backwards and wait calmly.

Step 3
When the dragon appears, do not scream or run away. Instead, press the silver button on your protective shield if the dragon breathes fiery flames.

Step 4
After that, speak in a low, gentle voice and offer the dragon some fresh water. Dragons become friendlier when people are calm and respectful.

Step 5
Finally, stroke the dragon’s rough, scaly neck slowly. If the dragon trusts you, it may let you fly beside its enormous, powerful wings through the bright sky.

Warning!
Never train a dragon alone, and NEVER wake a sleeping dragon!
