Jay - Year 1
Welcome to Jay Class Page!
Class Timetable
Week Beginning Monday 21st April 2025
We are currently reading stories about Lost stories and weather related books in Jay Class.
Our model text this half of Spring term is Monkey See, Monkey Do. We will be learning to retell the story using a story map and actions as a whole class. We will be examine lots of different aspects of the text including; writing a wanted poster to find the monkeys who have gone missing, using adjectives to describe the jungle in a descriptive piece of writing, and then innovating the story as a class by designing our own 'lost story'. At the end of this half-term we will be inventing our own lost story based on a story located in a jungle. In phonics a real focus on segmenting and blending words with 4 or more sounds will be our focus, including reading words with consonant clusters. Children will continue to read and write those high frequency common words in spellings and handwriting sessions, as well as reading both 'real' and 'alien' words in readiness for the Year 1 phonics screen test in Summer term.
In Maths, we will start the term by recognising, ordering and counting within numbers 0-50. Children especially need practice at counting back. We will learn to partition 2-digit numbers into tens and ones in order to strengthen our knowledge of place value. We will also be practising different methods for addition and subtraction calculations with numbers 0-20. The use of numberlines, beadstrings and ten frames will all be used to explore calculation.
Science will begin with our longitudinal study of the seasons as well explore and learn about 'signs of Spring' and compare the similarities and differences between the seasons of Autumn, Winter and Spring. The weather expected in the season of Spring will also form parts of our Science and be covered within our visits to the woods every Monday morning. Different types of materials will be another topic to explore within our Science lessons; those waterproof and not, as well as the properties of materials. Geography will link closely to our Science learning as we explore the climate in which we live and then a comparative climate in a different country - the rainforest / jungle.
Art & Design sessions will explore the use of Watercolour paint. We will study the work of artist Paul Klee and use our sketch pads to make visual notes and experiment with techniques and ideas adopted by the artist.
PSHE will follow the topic of 'Healthy Me' as we share the importance of staying healthy and our human right to be healthy both physically and mentally. We will learn what we can do to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
RE will explore the Christian faith through stories and relatable experiences. For example, we will learn about self-control and how this relates to Lent in the Christian calendar. We examine the symbol the cross and why this is important to Christians.
Computing will involve programming beebots and robots as we explore and develop our coding skills. And in PE we will develop our dance skills as we learn to make movements to beats of 8, explore different dance pathways and perform to one another.
