Julian is a Mermaid - Community Day
Friday 21st June was our first ever Wicklewood 'Community Day' at school. This was an opportunity for families to join their children in school, attend a wealth of workshops/talks including subjects such as 'Online Safety', Five Ways to Wellbeing', 'Phonics' 'Maths at Wicklewood' and 'Reading'. In Wren Class we conducted a Parent Cafe which centred around the story 'Julian is a Mermaid', is a children's picture book by author Jessica Love. It tells the story of a boy who wants to become a mermaid and participate in the Coney Island Mermaid Parade.
The book received wide praise from critics, both for its emotional depth and the author's artistic decision to mix watercolour and ink paintings, as well as for her usage of pastel tones against a more muted background. The story challenges gender types and celebrates / supports the normalisation of gender for all who read it.
Wren Class, made collage mermaids of themselves which are now displayed in our classroom to mark the learning and work we did around this text.
