Meet our Diversity Council

20th September 2024

The Diversity Council held their first meeting today and were joined by Oscar from Jay, Sybil from Starling, Clara and Theo from Swift, Teddy and Amber from Greenfinch, Aiden and Sienna from Lapwing, Davey and Ellisia from Kestrel and Archie and Diya from Kingfisher

During our meeting, we introduced ourselves, shared our reasons for being part of the council and discussed our goals for the upcoming year.

The key message that the children wanted to share was "BE YOURSELF" and they wanted all children to feel that they could be themselves at Wicklewood School.

We then thought about people that might feel different to us and produced the below images (please see attachment).

Meeting held on 18th October

We discussed the impact of our assembly on Black History and how the children felt about the assembly.  The consensus is that they enjoyed it and would do it again. The pupils have been asked to now speak with their classes and ask the following:

What have you learnt about

 Black History Month?

Have you seen any books in the

school about black people?

Have you done anything at school to

Celebrate it?

The children would like to arrange a Multi Culture Day when parents are invited to share facts and traditions around their own cultures - watch this space?

Diversity Council will continue to meet every two weeks

Meeting held on 12th November for Anti-Bullying Week

Diversity Council have challenged all children to say something nice to 3 different people this week in an effort to show the effects of kindness and respect towards others.

We talked about how we can help to "stamp out" bullying in our school.

Ellisia Year 5 said: "maybe we could do a play some time to explain the different ways people feel bullied"

Oscar Year Jay Class said: "we could allow people space to calm down when they are upset"

Clara from Year 2 said: "we could play with people who don't have friends at lunchtime and breaktime."

Davey Year 5 said: "we could have anti bullying patrols"

We will continue to discuss these ideas as the year goes on.
